  6.  GAME PLAY
  7.  
  8.  This PLAYBOOK contains all the offensive and defensive plays of ATARI
  9.  FOOTBALL.  It also summarizes some essential information, but it only
  10.  gives a bird's-eye vies of the game.  To get the most out of ATARI
  11.  FOOTBALL, study the manual for more details.
  12.  
  13.  ONE-PLAYER VERSION
  14.  You play offense all the time.  Computer plays defense.  You must call
  15.  up both offensive and defensive plays with the appropriate controller
  16.  for each side.
  17.  
  18.  TWO-PLAYER VERSION
  19.  Each person calls up a play and controls the movement of the odd-
  20.  colored playerwith the joystick.
  21.  
  22.  Offensive picks its play in a two-step process:
  23.  1.  Select a number (from 1 through 3) in response to the "PICK
  24.      FORMATION" cue on the scoreboard.
  25.  
  26.  2.  Select another number (from 1 through 6) in response to the "PICK
  27.      PLAY" cue.
  28.  
  29.  Defense selects its play by pressing one of the numbers (from 1
  30.  through 6) in response to the "PICK PLAY" cue on the scoreboard:

  32.  1.  For a tight line defense against the up-the-middle run and
  33.      medium-range plays
  34.  2.  For a wide line defense that provides a good rush and coverage
  35.      against the medium-range pass
  36.  3.  For a wide line defense against a long pass
  37.  4.  For a 5-man line that provides the best blitzing capabilities and
  38.      the best field goal defense.
  39.  5.  For short pass defense and goal line defense
  40.  6.  For punt defense

  42.  FIRE BUTTONS
  43.  The functions of the fire buttons are:
  44.  
  45.  UPPER
  46.  * To pass to receiver II
  47.  LOWER
  48.  * To pass to receiver I
  49.  * To kick a punt (Play 2-1)
  50.  * To hike the ball early (while on offense)
  51.  * To free-up the defensive control-player before the snap
  52.  * To transfer joystick control:
  53.    ON OFFENSE, to the intended receiver of a pass, while the ball is in
  54.    mid-flight;
  55.    ON DEFENSE, to the player closest to the ball carrier:
  56.  * After the ball carrier has crossed the line of scrimmage
  57.  * As soon as a pass is completed
  58.  * As soon as a pass is intercepted
  59.  * As soon as a punt is scooped up and being returned
  60.  
  61.  You can only transfer joystick control once during any single play.

  199.  Time the release of the ball to match up with the arrival of your
  200.  intended at one of the "cut-points" in his pattern.  After the
  201.  receiver completes his pattern, the defensive safety has a greater
  202.  chance of intercepting.
